PUPIL PREMIUM GRANT

Background

The Government believes that the allocation of Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between disadvantaged children and some of their peers, by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the children who need it most.

The Pupil Premium is allocated for children of statutory school age who:

  • are from low income families who are known to be eligible for free school meals
  • have been Looked After (Fostered or In Care) continuously for more than six months
  • have a parent serving in the Armed Forces
  • have been eligible for free school meals at any point in the last six years (the Ever 6 FSM measure)
  • have been adopted

Schools are free to spend their PPG allocation as they see fit.  However, we are held accountable for how we have used the additional funding to support children from low income families.

 Principles

  • we ensure that teaching & learning opportunities meet the needs of all our children
  • we ensure that appropriate provision is made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups and that the need of socially disadvantaged children are adequately assessed and addressed
  • in making provision for socially disadvantaged children, we recognise that not all children who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged
  • we also recognise that not all children who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals
  • we reserve the right to allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any child or groups of children that school has legitimately identified as being socially disadvantaged
  • Pupil Premium will be allocated following a Needs Analysis, which will identify priority classes, groups or individuals

Provision

Appropriate provision may include:

  • providing a high level of teaching support in classes, targeted at children needing help in Basic Skills to 'narrow the gap' in attainment
  • providing small group work with an experienced teacher or ATA focusing on 'gaps in learning'
  • providing 1:1 support with a TA, learning mentor or external agencies
  • targeting provision for able Y2 and Y6 FSM children to raise achievement either L3 at KS1 or L5 / 6 at KS2 if appropriate
  • acquiring effective resources and material aimed at raising standards / accelerating progress, particularly in reading and maths, to at least age related expectations

The Pupil Premium Grant Allocation for 2013 - 2014 was £5400

The staff and governors have targeted the PPG towards:

  • funding additional Teaching Assistant hours

  • providing small group work opportunities with experienced ATAs in order to accelerate progress

  • purchasing teaching and learning resources to accelerate the progress of small groups and individuals

The PPG for 2012-13 was £7241

The PPG was targeted towards:

  • funding an additional Midday Supervisor each lunch time - this has promoted social inclusion
  • purchasing resources to encourage, and enhance opportunities for, Writing Activities in the outdoor provision for EYFS / KS1 - this has proved to be popular and effective.  Staff have further extended provision within KS1 as a direct result.
  • funding the training of a member of staff in 'Phonics Counts'
  • purchasing teaching and learning resources to accelerate the progress of small groups and individuals - the Read, Write Inc Spelling programme is accelerating progress measurably across KS1 and KS2.
  • providing specialist led Forest School social activities - this has encouraged and allowed children with learning and / or social difficulties to experience success, which has impacted on their self-esteem
