Class 1 (Nursery & Reception): Early Years Foundation Stage

Welcome to Class 1!

Teacher: Mrs Scott                        Teaching assistants: Mrs Taylor, Mrs Glover & Mrs Curtis

Here are a few pieces of information to help you feel more familiar with our routines. There is a noticeboard in the cloakroom, which will keep you up to date with topics and other important information.

Nursery Children only

Our morning session begins at 8.50am and ends at 11.50am and our afternoon session begins at 12.30pm and ends at 3.30pm.

The Learning Journey

These are very special books that will contain photos, samples of work and notes regarding anything significant we observe your child achieving at nursery. You are welcome to bring things in that your child has done with you at home, and which you feel are important and add to your child’s learning experience – it may be a diary entry, photo, picture or something that you have noticed your child can do that they couldn’t before. These ‘Learning Journeys’ build up over the year and will be shared with you throughout the year.

Reception Children Only

The Learning Journey

This large, green book will come home with your child every Monday for you to share with them. These are very special books that will contain photos, samples of work and notes regarding anything significant we observe your child achieving at school. Please feel free to add things that your child has done with you at home, and which you feel are important and add to your child’s learning experience – it may be an observation, photo, picture or something that you have noticed your child can do that they couldn’t before. The book needs to be returned to school on Thursdays as the children will share them with each other, talking about what they have added at home. These ‘Learning Journeys’ build up over the year and are the ‘work’ of a child following the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. They also provide the evidence on which we make our assessments.

Library

Children will visit our school library on a Friday afternoon of each week. They will listen to stories and have the opportunity to bring a book home to share with you. This is a really important stage of learning to read as they gain skills such as:

  • knowing that we read from left to right

  • knowing which way to turn the page

  • guessing from the pictures what will happen next

  • joining in with parts of the stories

  • spotting familiar letters

Please remember to bring books back the following Friday as we cannot give out a new book until the old one has been returned. We ask for a donation for lost library books.

P.E

Our PE day is Wednesday, but this may change, so it is helpful if children have their kit (blue / black shorts, white t-shirt, plimsolls or trainers) in school Monday to Friday. We will send it home at the end of each half term for washing. Please ensure all kit and uniform is named.

Collection

Please can you inform us if your child will be attending School’s Out Club, is going on the school bus or if somebody different will be collecting your child from school.

Book bags

Please bring book bags to school every day.

Nursery and Reception children

Snack time

Children are entitled to a free piece of fruit or vegetable everyday under a scheme by the department of health. The fruit is placed on our snack table alongside a variety of other foods for snack time. Children under 5 years old are also entitled to a free carton of milk every day. Please collect a form from Reception and apply online or by post to register your child if you wish to do so. Children will enjoy snack time whilst sitting in groups with an adult. It provides a time for the children to talk to each other and encourages their independence and motor skills. If your child has any allergies please let us know. An example of the type of food served is shown below.

‘Bake day’ – children will have the opportunity to bake or cook food linked to our topic or a particular theme.

 Collection

Please can you inform Mrs Scott or Mrs Taylor if somebody different will be collecting your child from school.

Spare Clothes

Please can you ensure that your child has a bag of spare clothes (pants, socks, trousers, t shirt and a jumper) on their peg at all times. Children feel much more comfortable in their own clothes if they do need to get changed, and it saves staff time looking for appropriate clothing.  Please bring in a pair of wellies that can be left at school.
